‘SECRETS OF THE PENGUINS’ - NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC / DISNEY+ (TALESMITH) - CINEMATOGRAPHER
February to November 2024: Antarctic Overwinter

 Filming the incredible life cycle of emperor penguins on a continuous nine-month shoot, in temperatures down to -46°C, in snowstorms and through 2 months of polar night. One of only 12 people maintaining the remote station: no flights in/out, no replacement kit.

‘EXPEDITION KILLER WHALE’ (BBC) - CINEMATOGRAPHER
November 2023 to January 2024:

Boat-based shoot in the Antarctic peninsula, working closely with scientists. Gimbal filming, jib-operating on GSS team shooting fast-paced hunting behaviour from a zodiac, operating U/W polecam, appearing on-camera for ‘crew-narrated’ doc.

Long-lens RED/CN20, drone, RED on Ronin 2 with jib from boat, RS2 gimbal work from canoe, U/W polecam, some U/W filming with RED Monstro.

Camping & shooting in -40°C on sea ice, filming low light long-lens behaviour on Sony FX6/CN20, drone, aurora timelapses.

Long-lens RED/CN20, collaborative slider work with RED & jib work with Z Cam F6. Low-light & night filming. Sound recording & Motion Control.

Pallas's Cats, Mongolia: Hide-based long-lens RED/CN20.

Amur Tigers, Russia: Three shoots, one solo, rigging 4K camera traps in -30°C.

Glacier Calving, Greenland: 100+ drone flights, 2nd camera long-lens on Z Cam, long-term timelapses.

 

'Frozen Peaks' Episode 3:

Pumas, Chile: Thermal long-lens on SELEX Horizon & thermal drone rigs including heavy-lift DJI M600.

 

'Frozen South' Episode 4:

Antipodean Wandering Albatross, sub-Antarctic Antipodes Islands: Long-lens RED CN10/CN20, slider, drone, gimbal (RS2 & a7Siii).

All sound recordings used in albatross sequence.

 

'Frozen Lands' Episode 5:

Permafrost Slumps, Canada: Drone time-studies, long-term timelapse.

 

Tech Work on Frozen Planet II:

Developing custom rigs and grip, maintaining & testing specialist equipment: buggies, remote heads, camera traps, motion control systems, polecams, long-term timelapses. Prepping kit for remote & extreme environments.

Learning from the full process of production: story-boarding through to edit & music record.
